CBF Opposes Proposed Offshore Drilling

(ANNAPOLIS, MD)—Lisa Feldt, Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) Vice President for Environmental Protection and Restoration, issued this statement following the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management proposal to open the Mid-Atlantic to offshore drilling.

"Offshore drilling poses unjustifiable risks to the Chesapeake Bay, our coasts, and the economy. A major spill would be devastating to wildlife, the fishing and tourism industries, military operations, and the hundreds of thousands of jobs that rely upon clean water in the region.
"Cities across the region have voted to oppose offshore drilling and the governors of both Virginia and Maryland are also opposed. At a time when our nation needs to drastically reduce greenhouse gases, CBF opposes expanding fossil fuel exploration and development off the Atlantic coast."
