Why Whales Follow Menhaden into the Bay

Whales are following schools of menhaden to Virginia’s waters and even up into the Bay. Unfortunately, the Chesapeake Bay has not been seeing the number of young menhaden it did historically, raising concerns for scientists, anglers, and anyone who cares about the health of the Bay.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) 2017 amendment to consider the species' importance to the food change by establishing ecological reference points was adopted by the Commission in August 2020.
