Are you concerned about the health and future of Virginia’s rivers and the Chesapeake Bay? Do you have a passion for improving your community and an interest in meeting other Chesapeake Bay lovers? Do you want to make a difference but aren’t quite sure where to start?
If so, CBF's VoiCeS program is looking for you!
VoiCeS, which stands for “Volunteers as Chesapeake Stewards,” is an adult education program that provides participants with important information on subjects affecting the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on Bay experiences and empowers individuals to take their Bay knowledge and experiences back to their own community.
Class schedule: Thursday evenings, September 13th – November 8, 2012
Materials Fee: $30 per individual/$50 per couple
Class topics include:
- Chesapeake Bay 101
- Urban Water Quality Issues
- State of the James
- Fishes, birds and grasses of the watershed
- Sustainable Development and Greening our Cities
- James River History and Nature Walk
- Citizen Action and Advocacy
- Agriculture and the Watershed
- Science and Grassroots Action for clean water
- Special program trip on the James River!
What does VoiCeS entail?
- Classroom Training: eight 2.5-hour classes once a week taught by scientists and environmental professionals
- Service to Community: 40 hours over the course of four to six months, supporting environmental awareness in your community
- Formal Designation as Chesapeake Steward
