The Incredible Oyster Reef

Most of us who love the Chesapeake Bay know that oysters once existed in storied numbers in an earlier time, long before poor water quality, disease, and overharvesting nearly put an end to Crassostrea virginicaToday as science has taught us so much more about these threats to the Chesapeake Bay's health, we are thinking about an old question in a new way. Were oysters once abundant because the Bay had clear, clean water or did the Bay have clear, clean water once because oysters were abundant?

In this video, we explore how the lowly oyster does quite extraodinary things—from filtering our water to providing habitat—oysters really are quite incredible, a keystone species with a remarkable and indispensable ability to heal the Bay's troubled waters.

Now more than ever, as oyster sanctuaries in Maryland face the very real threat of being opened up to harvest, recognizing the power of oysters is critical. Click here to take action to protect our oysters that are so critical to the health of the Bay!
